Typollusionist

ypollusionist is an artwork that holds mysteries beyond its beauty of ornaments. There are meaning and symbolism subtly weaved through it. The tapestry of decorative element conceals something more than what it seems. The main idea of this piece is to hide more meaning to a piece of design and to camouflage letters.

The center main type is an ambigram. On the Sun king side up, it reads "Illusion". On the Moon Queen side up, it reads "Magic".

Illusion alludes to the ornaments around the center piece that conceal messages. The letterforms are deliberately designed to be very vague. On the Sun King side up, it reads "Wonder". On the Moon Queen side up, it reads "Amazed".

Magic points to the fact that this artwork can be view upside down or right side up. With each orientation, the design shows a different meaning.

Magic and illusion are what makes us amazed and wonder how things happened and came to be. And also linking this sense of wonder to the concept of time. Hence the reference to clockface design behind the sun and moon. The same feeling of awe springs to mind when we gaze at the night sky.

This work is highly influenced by European illuminated manuscripts. From the overall layout with highly decorative border, to the use of gold, to the blackletter style for the center title, to the style of ornaments.
